Best ways to get beautiful skin

See all 2 photos

I am a very lazy fellow but ever since I wrote a Hub on how to maintain healthy hair I realised how important it is to have some good looking and healthy hair and hence I have started giving some time to my hairs too. But a good shirt over a bad trouser makes a bad pair, similarly good hair over unhealthy skin makes a bad pair again. Thinking about the issue I thought to write about the ways to keep our skin healthy on our own without going to the doctor. Don't worry I will not suggest any beauty or age defying cream, I too am against using synthetic products. I best believe in keeping things natural and hence I will suggest you the natural ways only.

Protein:

The basic component of skin is protein but be sensitive with the kind of skin nourishment you choose. Pulses, soya milk, tofu etc etc are good option. Low fat milk could be other option but if you want to go for non vegetarian food then include lean meats like fish, chicken besides egg in your diet. Fish is the best source of protein as it also provides us essential fatty acids.

Vitamin A:

This is popular for its improving eyesight but it proves to be good for a number of other things too. This fat soluble vitamin is essential for the maintaining and healing elliptical tissues which make up most of the skin. Sources for vitamin A are egg yolk and non fat milk. Food rich in beta carotene are also good source of this vitamin. Eating fruits rich in vitamin A can also give you a glowing and radiant skin.

Beta carotene:

German researchers have found that as little as 30 milligrams of beta carotene a day (equivalent to 1 and ½ cups of cooked carrot) can help reduce the redness of skin caused by sunburn. Also when combined with vitamin E, other carotenoids seems to reduce the sensitivity of the skin to sunburns. Best sources are carrot, sweet potato, tomatoes, watermelons, papaya, broccoli and spinach.

Vitamin B:

They help convert calories to energy of skin metabolism and enzyme that maintain normal skin functions, like keeping oil-producing glands going that keeps skin moist and smooth. That is why poor intake of any vitamin B will cause dry and scaly skin. Best sources are poultry, red meat, fish, bananas, whole grains, peanuts butter and eggs.

Vitamin C:

When taken internally, this vitamin helps maintain collagen, which is the internal building structure of skin. But the exposure to sunburn or stress can drain vitamin C from our skin leaving it vulnerable to damage from environment. Best sources are citrus fruits and juices, slow cantaloupes, strawberries, tomato and green peas. Regular intake of vitamin C helps get fresh looking skin.

Vitamin E:

This antioxidant helps slow the ageing of skin cells by reducing the production of enzyme called collagenase, which breaks down collagen, causing skin to sag and wrinkle. Sun exposure can deplete vitamin E from skin, making it more vulnerable to sunburns. Best sources are salmon, legume, lean meat, almonds, leafy vegetables, olive and sesame oils.

Selenium:

This antioxidant mineral minimizes the damaging effects of ultraviolet rays, thereby the risk of sunburn. Low blood level of selenium also increases your risk of cancer, say researcher at Texas Tech University at Lubbock. Best sources are tuna, wheat germ, sesame seeds and whole grains. Be sure to eat whole grains to remove skin imperfections.

Zinc:

This mineral helps maintain collagen and elastin fibres that help maintain the firmness in the skin. It also links amino acids that are needed for the formation of collagen, it helps in healing of wounds. Best sources are sea foods, turkey, pork, soybeans and mushrooms.

Water:

Take lots of water to clean and detoxify your system. It also helps keep your skin hydrated. Take about 8 to 10 glasses of water everyday. As water flushes down your toxins, your skin starts glowing. Though there are contradictory studies that one should not drink too much water so 8 glasses of water is recommended a day.

Exercise:

It improves the blood circulation and helps keep skin healthy and firm. Following a daily exercise of about 45minutes to one-hour works wonders for skin. Brisk walking and yoga along with facial exercise are beneficial.

Very nice. Drinking enough water everyday is actually very beneficial, not only for the skin but our overall health. It surprises me that a lot of people like drinking sodas filled with sugar and crap, but hate drinking clean water.

Thanks for stopping by. Proper intake of water itself solves a lot of problem. Nature has provided us with so many options that if we can use them then there will be lot of problems that we will be able to cure on our own. Even the medicines that we take are made from nature's extracts.
